Good morning, happy Monday & happy Thanksgiving!
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
This summer I had a chance to visit New England and one of the spots we checked out was Plymouth, Massachusetts, the landing sight of the pilgrims in 1620. 102 passengers boarded the Mayflower for a brutal 66-day journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the new world … only 52 survived the first year. However, in October 1621 the surviving Pilgrims along with 90 members of the Wampanoag Native American people celebrated the first Thanksgiving. Wow!
I get bent out of shape when the wi-fi is slow, and yet these Pilgrims faced unfathomable obstacles and loss, and yet chose to be thankful in spite of them. Amazing!
I have come to the conclusion that being thankful is a choice. In Philippians 4:12 the Apostle Paul states “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” Exceptionally wise words from a man who was illegally thrown in jail over and over again for sharing his faith.
There is a parable that you likely have heard before, but warrants repeating:
A grandfather is talking with his grandson. The grandfather says “In life, there are two wolves inside of us which are always at battle. One is a good wolf which represents things like kindness, bravery, and love. The other is a bad wolf which represents things like greed, hatred, and fear.”
The grandson thinks about this for a minute and asks, “Grandfather, which one wins?”
The grandfather replies, “The one you feed.”
This Thanksgiving as we feed our faces with lots of food, I would encourage all of us to also feed our minds with thanksgiving and gratitude.
I know 2022 has been a challenging year, but I still believe there is so much to be thankful for.
